as up makes history once again . . .

September 16th, 2007

at the moment i’m writing this blog entry, the up pep squad has just been announced that they are the champions of the uaap cheer dance competition.

i always look forward to this competition at uaap.  funny i almost forgot that the competition was to be held today.  good thing i happened to bump into someone whom i used to work with in my former office, and being a graduate of up as well, she reminded me of the said competition.

today’s such a weird day, actually.  aside from bumping into her, who was the person i hadn’t bade farewell when i resigned from my former work, i happen to also bump into a grade school teacher of mine.  oh well, i didn’t greet her . . . first, i wasn’t sure she really was my teacher (although i heard her name which was the name of my teacher so i knew she was really it), another, i’m not sure if she remembers me.

so, going back to my topic in this blog . . . today’s a moment that i feel proud of being a product of up.  back when i was still studying at up, it was at that time when up had won triple back-to-back in the cheer dance competition.  it’s sweet to finally get the title back.

then comes a thought, albeit the fact that our pep squad is one of the best in the uaap, why does it seem that their efforts aren’t enough to boost the energy and fighting spirit of our basketball team?

last year, i had been informed that i should look forward to this season’s uaap, because up will have a fighting chance in basketball.  we’re gonna make history . . . in preparation for our centennial next year.  wow! such a preparation, ha . . . our basketball team did make history this season . . . no doubt about that.  why?  it was a sweep! na-sweep tayo! haha . . . wala tayong panalo ever! kahiya talaga . . . oh well, i’ve long accepted the fact that up’s not really the best basketball league in the uaap.  i always argue to people . . . we’re no basketball players . . . for we know our brains can lead us to more successes than just basketball.  but of course, everyone dreams of being one of the best in this sport, right?

funny that whenever people talk about the uaap, it’s always about basketball.  well, ok . . . it’s the highlight . . . but it is to the detriment of up.  for we end up looking like the school which is no good in sports.  hey! we’re not . . . mind you, we always end up in the top 3 in the overall standing of the uaap.  we just  have to bear in mind that the uaap is not just about basketball alone . . . there are other sports . . . and it is in these other sports that up excels.

and so . . . i was again told, watch out next year . . . because up will do its best to have a fighting chance in basketball.  my answer?  should we end up in the finals, i’ll definitely watch the game live.  promise ‘yun!

is it possible?  i don’t know.  but i guess the only thing i can count on this time is the fact that up is a young team . . . and having said so, next season, the whole team is intact.  that means . . . less adjustment for the players . . . just more practice and time to gel as a team.  i think joe lipa is a good coach . . . and perhaps, he is capable enough to boost the morale of our young basketball team . . . to make them believe that we actually can be part of the top teams in basketball in the uaap.

oh well . . . regardless if we can make it to the championship next year as a gift for our centennial, i still would like to say that i’m proud of being a product of up.  although we’re battling controversies every now and then . . . although some people would say that we, upians, sometimes have attitudes they cannot understand . . . i think it is innate.  tayo-tayo lang na mga taga-up ang makakaintindi at makakapag-explain within ourselves why we are different.  and take note . . . we are the selected few . . . the privileged ones . . . those given the chance to be part of the most sought-after universities in the country.  from what i remember back in college . . . among those who take the upcat every year, only 1% of that population gets in . . . and that is enough for us to be proud of ourselves.

again, my congratulations to the up pep squad for taking back our crown in the cheer dance competition.

p. s. please still continue praying that i get to fulfill my dream soon . . .
